Mahler: Symphony No. 5

The NHK Symphony Orchestra, which marks its 100th anniversary in October 2026, takes on Mahler's "Symphony No. 5" together with its Chief Conductor Fabio Luisi. The NHK Symphony Orchestra has earned high acclaim with works such as "Symphony No. 8" in 2023 and "Symphony No. 3" and "Symphony No. 4" at the "Mahler Festival 2025" in 2025, and this is a long-awaited challenge in that flow. In the first movement, "Funeral March," deep shadows are carved into the somber rhythm, and in the second movement, a dramatic development in which passion and silence intersect is vivid. In the third movement, a dynamic scherzo centered on the horns evokes the Viennese tradition. In the fourth movement, "Adagietto," impressively used in "Death in Venice," an aesthetic resonance drifts, and in the final movement the music turns dramatically into a surging torrent. 2026年10月に創立100周年を迎えるNHK交響楽団が、首席指揮者ファビオ・ルイージと取り組んだマーラー《交響曲第5番》。N響は23年の《第8番》、25年の「マーラー・フェスティバル2025」での《第3番》《第4番》などで高い評価を得ており、その流れの中で満を持しての挑戦となった。第1楽章〈葬送行進曲〉では沈痛なリズムに深い陰影が刻まれ、第2楽章では激情と静寂が交錯する劇的な展開が鮮烈だ。第3楽章ではホルンを中心とした躍動的なスケルツォがウィーンの伝統を思わせる。『ベニスに死す』で印象的に用いられた第4楽章〈アダージェット〉では耽美的な響きが漂い、終楽章では一転して怒涛の音楽が繰り広げられる。ルイージとN響の美学が結実した名演の誕生である。録音: 2026年4月16日、17日 サントリーホール (ライヴ・レコーディング)
